The following editorial was submitted by Wayne Roskos,
                                           Co-Chair Winter Rendezvous 2009

The northland is honored once again to entertain the snowmobilers of Minnesota. Itasca County Snowmobile Alliance is a great assembly of some of the finest clubs of Region II. This group of clubs is made up of the first to ever collect a GIA payment for their work on the trails. Our trail systems are clearly marked and each club shows their pride with a sign indicating what club they belong to. It is like an artist signing his painting.

We are excited to know that the “real” snowmobilers of the world will again be sharing our trail systems in an effort to unite all for a great ride in the frozen white wonderland of the north.

Our trails wonder through the trees, hills, over bridges, and under canopies of the tallest pine trees you might ever see. The famous “Taconite Trail” starts right here in Grand Rapids and takes you on a winter adventure all the way to Ely. Mother Nature loves to show off her wild life and some of our trails will take you to over looks that will attest to our heritage of the Iron Ore mining industry.

Ruttger’s Sugar Lake Lodge will be your destination and they will not disappoint. They have excellent lodging facilities with great dining available. They have great access to our trail systems and the beauty of the northland is just a squeeze of the throttle away.

Itasca County is home to many lakes and rivers. Ice fishing, cross country skiing, and ice skating are among the other winter sports that are readily available. The winter time is an excellent time to be in the northland. The stars in the night fill the wide open sky with wonderment and hope. It is some of Mother Nature’s best work.

Grand Rapids offers a great variety of things to see and do. Shoppers will love the new Super Wal-Mart, Target, and the neatest up north shopping places like the Purple Pine Cone and the Red Willow. If it is movies you like then you will love the Mann Theaters and their 8 screens. Dining is just as available to what ever taste you may like. From the Forest Lake restaurant and their “World Famous” bar burger to the well known Apple Bee’s or even the Ground Round. You know, we even have a YMCA and a “Anytime Fitness” so if you need to work off some of that great food, you are in luck. All the great towns in our area offer something unique about living in the great northland. Big Fork, Deer River, Hill City, Coleraine, Nashwauk, Marcell, and Squaw Lake have trails running right thru them. Gas and food is plentiful on the trail.

We invite you to come and share some great snowmobiling with us. The adventure begins at the 2009 MnUSA Winter Rendezvous February 12th-14th. Don’t forget to shop for something special for your Valentines!
