The Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club was the first club to organize in the country in 1960. The Ely Igloos were one of the founding members of the International Snowmobile Association - ISA, then to become Minnesota United Snowmobile Association - MnUSA.
Members of the club have developed trails in the Ely area, and each December numerous club members volunteer their time to clear the trails of trees and branches for the upcoming snowmobile season.
An important mission the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club has been involved with from the very beginning is the training of young snowmobile riders with a Snowmobile Safety Class each year. These classes teach boys and girls of at least 11 years of age about the proper etiquette of snowmobiling and the rules of the trail.
In recent years, the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club has taken on the task of grooming the Ely area trails. The club receives funding from the state to maintain and groom the Grant-in-Aid Tomahawk Trail. Other local trails the Bianchi Trail (off the Taconite Trail), the Ely/Winton Railroad Grade, and the 13 Corners Trail are also groomed by our club.
In addition, our club has taken on the staking and grooming of numerous lake trails Shagawa Lake/Fall Lake Trail, Burntside Lake Trail, Bass Lake Trail, White Iron Lake/
Birch Lakes Trail, Little Long Lake Trail, Fall Lake/Cedar Lake Trail, Grassy Lake Trails, the Ely Igloo Trail to Lake Vermilion, and of course, the famous Chainsaw Sisters Trail. The club relies on club memberships, raffles and trail sign advertising to raise money to groom these trails. Donations from other snowmobile clubs are also welcome, as the Ely area usually has snow when other areas do not. Snowmobilers from all over, come to Ely to ride our wonderfully groomed trails.
With over 125 miles of trails to groom, the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club recently entered the world of charitable gambling with pulltabs at the Grand Ely Lodge, Portage Bar and Cranberrys Bar to help raise grooming dollars, and to purchase a $100,000 2002 BR180 groomer.
We have recently combined our snowmobile club with the local ATV club. We are now the Ely Igloo Snowmobile/ATV Club.
If you snowmobile, support the sport and join a club. Join the #1 Club that started it all, the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club.
